Canadian Chuck Wagon Race

Half Mile of Hell in Alberta Canada

Half Mile of Hell… Something that is worth checking out if you are ever in Canada, is the chuckwagon races. While filming NATIVE The Prodigies of an Icon, we’ve tried to tie in the local culture to the people and places we visit. So, we made a quick pitstop at the Bonnyville Ag Society Pro Rodeo and Chuckwagon Racing. Such an exciting experience. You’ll get to see some of the same chuckwagon racers from the Calgary Stampede in a small home town environment.

bison on pasture in northern Alberta

As far north as you can go in Alberta, before the bush.

This is about as far north you can go in Alberta before hitting “the bush.” Allen Oszust is a character! From running a successful tire shop in Elk Point to acquiring a large plot of land in the north of Glendon Alberta Canada, Al is a very enthusiastic Canadian Bison Producer who isn’t shy about sharing his love for the animal. We first met Al while working some bison last winter in a snow storm. Earlier in the spring we were able to visit his incredible ranch on the northern outskirts of Alberta.

First Generation Canadian Bison Ranchers

Here are some faces many people don’t know. Shannon & Melanie Ostapovich of Wolverine Energy and Infrastructure Inc in Calgary Alberta Canada spend their weekends on their bison ranch in Elk Point. While it’s a passion project for them, they represent a new generation of up and coming bison producers in Canada. We’re excited to have had the small window of opportunity to meet Shannon and Melanie and include the perspectives and dreams of first generation Canadian bison ranchers in our film.

Videographer faces off with Massive Bison Bull in Canada.

Look at that massive bull… he’s a Wolverine Bison Company bred bison! Tail up and broadside to Charlie… eeek… he was just letting us know who’s boss. Lawrence Ference with Corner Creek Farms in Elk Point Alberta Canada is a bit of a buffalo whisperer. If you are ever looking for an education on bison communication, he’s your guy… after all he’s been raising bison since the 80’s. Like Cyrus Bison Ranch, early spring on Corner Creek Farms is full of pasture preparation for the coming year and managing feed resources for the next long winter.

Canadian Spring and Wildfire Smoke on Cyrus Bison Ranch

Early spring at Cyrus Bison Ranch in Bonnyville Alberta Canada this year was packed with wildfire smoke and dry conditions, but that didn’t prevent Canadian Bison Ranchers from preparing pastures to feed their herds and prepare for another long winter ahead. It’s a year round process to keep their bison fed!

Noble Premium Bison Heartland Hosts

Does it look like scenes from Heartland on CBC? While crossing Canada to film NATIVE | The Prodigies of an Icon https://nativemovie.com we stopped in to visit and interview with Kelly and Peter Long of Noble Premium Bison and stayed in their incredible guest cabin (custom built by Peter) just outside of the Town of High River where the Heartland TV Show is filmed and Amber Marshall has a pretty awesome little boutique Marshall’s Country Store.

Kelly and Peter’s cabin is not too far around the corner from the Heartland Ranch (yes it’s real and no we won’t tell you where it is)… we may have accidentally driven up on them filming Season 17 (sorry to whomever drives the white Expedition in Season 17!)…

Beautiful country!

Turns out High River is a hotspot for films. From Superman to Heartland. Maybe they’ll add the NATIVE documentary to the list.

If you ever visit, be sure to check out the incredible bison jump mural in town. Museum of the Highwood & High River Visitor Information Centre has some great maps of spots to check out and information on filming locations.
